2026-04-05: Monday Eve
Background
- Sacrifice System
- Jews in Diaspora - if they brought a sheep or an ox or doves... the animals could not withstand a long journey. Or if they did, they might arrive damaged and not suitable for sacrifices.
- So the chief priests and the Temple would offer animals to be sacrificed
- But if you are coming from outside, your money was worthless in the Temple...
- So you need to change it with money changers who take a certain percentage for the service of changing the money
- And their scales were unfair
- And they would overprice the animals
- Two problems:
- Buying and Selling in the House of the Lord ("Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!" (John 2:16))
- Thievery and Robbery ("You have made it a den of thieves")
- The House of God lost its reverence and its sanctity
- The House of Prayer became a house of buying and selling
What is the House of God to me?
What is the House of God really?
- House of Prayer
- “For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Isaiah 56:7)
- Where we go to pray, to speak to God, and hear His answer to me
- “For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Isaiah 56:7)
- House of Healing
- Hospital for Sinners
- Sacramental Life (Yesterday’s Sermon)
- “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)
- House of Reconciliation
- “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” (Matthew 18:15-17)
- Some come to Church to win arguments… but we are on the side of peace
- “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” (Matthew 18:15-17)

- House of Giving and Serving Others
- To take the blessing of the service
- ”The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” - 11th Hour Gospel
- “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:27)
- “Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.” (Acts 2:44-45)
