Humility - HG Bishop Peter Sermon

St Mina's Feast 2020 in Nashville, TN

Was it right for disciples to ask "who will be greatest?" - Yes! Christ did not rebuke them as He rebuked some other questions. Also... Everyone should strive to be great! Greatest dad, teacher, husbamd, etc.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less

Humility takes strength - someone who is weak, low self-esteem, etc is not humble. Christ was not like that.

Humility is a decision (like love). Being humble is the key to a joyful and peaceful life.

Psalm 91:1 (911... Emergency) - He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Two parts to humility

  • Humility with God
  • Humility with Man

Just like a prostration has two parts:

  • Going down
  • Rising up

I need to go down and humble myself before God and rise up and practice the humility with man

Humility of man with God

  • When was the last time you stood and spoke to God (genuinely)
  • Stand in the presence of your Father - even if you don't speak a single word
  • Humility is to spend time with God, understanding that if God doesn't give me ___ then I won't have it! (joy, peace, solution to my problem, etc)
  • The worst thing we can do is depend on ourselves - "Fix It" Mentality (e.g. disciples at feeding the multitude)
  • The solution is spending alone time with God.
  • Spending time with God leads to humility. Spending time with people leads to pride
  • I cannot sit in a room alone and feel important. But among other people, I might feel important

Humility of man with man

  • "I am sorry" - hardest three words
  • Na3am 7ader Akhtet
  • My temper gets me into trouble. My pride keeps me in that trouble
  • In order to have humility, I must train myself to say "I am sorry" as much as I can

What is the result of humility?

  • Grace - the power of God in your life
  • But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
